Approved Redistricting Maps
In reference to the commissioner redistricting project. The advisory board had a constituent come in to ask questions and to express some concerns and a suggested map submitted. As the advisory board, our job is to be fair and just so a second map is being constructed for review. This map will also be put on the website for review by the public. After the final public hearing and the end date for written submissions the Board of commissioners will then approve a resolution selecting either Map One or Map Two. This will happen on September 12th at the regularly scheduled commissioner meeting.
When this project started this year, there was quite a large variance. The numbers are as follows:
Commissioner District 1: Population 836 – 36%
Commissioner District 2: Population 487 – 21%
Commissioner District 3: Population 1006 – 43%
_________________________________________
Map one changed the district lines as follows:
Commissioner District 1: Population 782 – 34%
Commissioner District 2: Population 774 – 33%
Commissioner District 3: Population 773 - 33%
_________________________________________
Map two changed the district lines as follows:
Commissioner District 1: Population 782 – 34%
Commissioner District 2: Population 823 – 36%
Commissioner District 3: Population 724 – 31%
_________________________________________
Either map one or map two falls within the statute of not more than 5% variance between the most populous and the least populous districts.

Commissioner Redistricting Information
According to C.R.S. 30-10-306, every 10 years the commissioner districts need to be evaluated to ensure that there is an even amount of population in each of the three commissioner districts. Unfortunately, in Sedgwick County this has not been done for over 40 years. The census was to be done in 2020 and that would normally be the redistricting year, however, a little thing called COVID happened, and everything got delayed. That brings us to 2023. Legislation allowed a variance and commissioner redistricting now must be accomplished by September 2023. With that being said, the census population numbers have been applied to the county maps and work has been going on to get the districts evened out. We have had an advisory panel with Jim Beck and Ken Berges working to draw the new lines and to keep the population in each within a very small 5% variance and to consecutively number the districts.
When this project started this year, there was quite a large variance. The numbers are as follows:
Commissioner District 1: Population 836 – 36%
Commissioner District 2: Population 487 – 21%
Commissioner District 3: Population 1006 – 43%
The new lines have been drawn and the districts are now numbered consecutively. Just for your information, the area that includes Julesburg has been district 1 but the area that includes Ovid has been district 3, then Sedgwick has been district 2. Statutes direct that the districts be numbered consecutively so that is also part of this project. After the resolution passes, the Julesburg area will remain District 1, but the Ovid area will be changed to District 2 and the Sedgwick area will be changed to District 3.
There will be public hearings during the commissioner’s meetings on Tuesday, August 15, 2023, Tuesday, August 22, 2023, and August 30, 2023, at 9:00am. You are welcome to submit comments by email or in the office all the way through September 10th. Following are the new numbers for the commissioner districts:
Commissioner District 1: Population 782 – 34%
Commissioner District 2: Population 774 – 33%
Commissioner District 3: Population 773 33%
